So, the nation begins to expect…it’s that time again when every football fan starts to dream of their country lifting the greatest prize in football: The FIFA World Cup.
Unfortunately, the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish missed out following some below-par performances, and the Irish, well, I think the less said about that one the better. Therefore, the whole of the UK and Ireland will be cheering on the one remaining home nation to glory…or possibly not, but it’s nice to think that everyone will get behind Rooney and co.
The draw for the group stage was certainly kind to England and at least gives hope to achieving the minimum target of qualifying for the knock-out rounds. OK, you have to beat the best teams in order to go all the way and win it, but at least there’s a good chance of avoiding a complete hammering from the English press if they reach the later stages!
The last international tournament in Austria and Switzerland (European Championship 2008) was a complete wash out, with all home nations failing to qualify for that one, but England did appear in the last World Cup, staged in Germany, 2006.
